On the nature of optical nuclei in FR I radio - galaxies from ACS / HST imaging polarimetry ⋆

چکیده
We obtained optical imaging polarimetry with the ACS/HRC aboard the HST of the 9 closest radiogalaxies in the 3C catalogue with an FR I morphology. The nuclear sources seen in direct HST images in these galaxies are found to be highly polarized with levels in the range ∼ 2 11 % with a median value of 7 %. We discuss the different mechanisms that produce polarized emission and conclude that the only viable interpretation is a synchrotron origin for the optical nuclei. This idea is strengthened by the analogy with the polarization properties of BL Lac objects, providing also further support to the FR I/BL Lac unified model. This confirms previous suggestions that the dominant emission mechanism in low luminosity radio-loud AGN is related to non-thermal radiation produced by the base of their jets. In addition to the nuclear polarization (and to the large scale optical jets), polarization is detected co-spatially with the dusty circumnuclear disks, likely due to dichroic transmission; the polarization vectors are tangential to the disks as expected when the magnetic field responsible for the grains alignment is stretched by differential

The HST view of the FR I / FR II dichotomy ⋆
In order to explore how the FR I / FR II dichotomy is related to the nuclear properties of radio galaxies, we studied a complete sample of 26 nearby FR II radio galaxies using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images and compared them with a sample of FR I previously analyzed. FR I nuclei lie in the radio-optical luminosity plane along a tight linear correlation, which argues for a common synchrotro...
متن کاملUnderstanding the nature of FR II optical nuclei: a new diagnostic plane for radio galaxies⋆
We extend our study of the nuclei of 3CR FR II radio galaxies through HST optical images up to z = 0.3. In the majority of them an unresolved nucleus (central compact core, CCC) is found. We analyze their position in the plane formed by the radio and optical nuclear luminosities in relation to their optical spectral properties. The broad–lined objects (BLO) have the brightest nuclei: they are p...
متن کاملThe HST survey of the B 2 sample of radio - galaxies : optical nuclei and the FR I / BL Lac unified scheme ⋆
We examine the optical properties of the nuclei of low luminosity radio-galaxies using snapshot HST images of the B2 sample. In agreement with the results obtained from the analysis of the brighter 3C/FR I sample, we find a correlation between fluxes (and luminosities) of the optical and radio cores. This provides further support for the interpretation that the optical nuclear emission in FR I ...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملThe nuclear radio – optical properties of intermediate redshift FR II radio galaxies and quasars ⋆
We extend the study of the nuclei of 3CR objects as seen with the HST to higher redshift FR II radio sources (0.4 < z < 0.6). Our results reflect what has been found for FR II of lower redshift. The position of the nuclei on the plane formed by optical and radio luminosities is related to their optical spectral classification: the nuclei of both high and low excitation galaxies lie on the corre...
